MAENG ILSUN
맹일선의 작업은 본다는 행위와 연관된 일련의 고찰이다. 우리가 보았으며, 파악했다고 믿고 있는 세계의 실체는 우리의 확신과 다를 수 있다. 본다는 행위와 그에 따른 인식은 대상의 일면에 국한되어 있고, 그 이면에 관한 지식은 언제나 불확실한 것이다. 작가는 자신이 감각하는 세계 이면의 불확실성을 그대로 두지 못하고, 대상의 인식된 일면에 대칭하는 모습으로 그 이면을 추정하면서, 불확실성이 주는 불안을 끊임없이 상쇄하려 한다.
맹일선이 그리는 오브제들은 스스로 회전하거나 자신의 반대편을 복제하면서 완벽한 대칭에 다다르려 애쓴다. 그림 속 오브제들의 대칭을 향한 강박은, 작가가 세계를 보다 정확히 이해하기 위해 지속하는 강박적인 노력을 닮아 있다. 이와 같은 부단한 추구에도 불구하고 인간의 세계 인식은 항상 미흡 할 수 밖에 없는데, 이를 증명하듯 수작업으로 이루어낸 대칭적 이미지들은 끝내 완전한 대칭에는 도달하지 못한다.
The work of Maeng Ilsun consists of a series of contemplations associated with the act of seeing. The truth of the world we believe we have seen and understood may differ from our belief. The act of seeing and the resulting perception are confined to a single aspect of the subject, leaving what lies beneath perpetually uncertain. The artist cannot disregard the uncertainty of the world she experiences; she conjectures what lies beneath in a manner that mirrors the perceived aspect of the subject, while also continuously attempting to offset the discomfort caused by this uncertainty.
Ilsun’s objects strive for perfect symmetry by rotating themselves or replicating their opposing sides. Their obsession with symmetry resonates with the artist’s relentless efforts to more accurately comprehend the world. Despite such perseverance, human understanding of the world is inevitably flawed. As if to prove this point, her manually crafted symmetrical images ultimately do not achieve perfect symmetry.
